The complexity of present-day questions in fundamental physics require a highly interdisciplinary approach involving experimental data and theoretical insights from multiple fields such as accelerator and detector physics, particle physics, astrophysics, cosmology, string theory and mathematics.
An exceptionally broad spectrum of research in this field is being worked on in Hamburg.
A prominent example is the quest for understanding the nature of dark matter, which although being well motivated by astrophysics and cosmology, still lacks experimental verification and therefore is being searched for in astroparticle experiments and at colliders such as the LHC.
Our main objective is to integrate the different lines of research by strengthening the existing links between the groups in order to address some of the major issues in the modern quest for the laws of nature in a coherent manner.
On July 3rd, 2009, Senator H Gundelach has announced the winners of the Hamburg Excellence Initiative . "Connecting Particles with the Cosmos" is one of the eight "Clusters of Excellence" that will be funded. It comprises physicists, astrophysicists and mathematicians from Hamburg University and DESY. The kick-off meeting was held on November 3rd and 4th, 2009, at DESY.
The aim is to create an interdisciplinary research cluster, competitive throughout Germany and beyond, which combines unique expertise on accelerator and detector physics, particle physics, astro- and astroparticle-physics with cosmology, string theory and mathematical physics. This will form a basis that enables the scientific community in Hamburg to provide significant contributions to the worldwide research programme on particle physics and its connection to cosmology that will have implications on our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature.
